Growing patterns

What are Growing Patterns?

A pattern is an arrangement or sequence that follows a certain order.

In the last lesson, you learned about repeating patterns– patterns that repeat themselves, like:

2, 4, 2, 4, 2, 4…

Growing patterns are different.

Take a look:

2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 ….

Each term is growing by two.

Patterns that increase (or grow) according to a certain rule, are called increasing patterns, or growing patterns.

Here’s another growing pattern:

Parts of a Growing Pattern:

A growing pattern has two important parts – the terms and the rule.

Here’s a growing pattern with shapes.👇 It also has terms and a rule.

1. Terms :

Each step of a growing pattern is a term.

2. Rule :

The amount that each term increases by in each step is called the pattern’s rule.

Finding the Rule of a Growing Pattern :

How can we find the rule of this pattern? 🤔

You got it! 😎

To find the rule of a pattern, look at how the pattern changes from one term to the next.

Let’s try it! 🤗

So, what do you think the rule of this pattern is?

The rule of this pattern is:

Nicely done! 😎
