Review – add one-digit numbers – sums to 10
key notes :-
🔢 What is Addition?
Addition means combining two numbers to make a bigger number.
We use the plus sign (+) and the equals sign (=).
- Example: 3 + 2 = 5
🧮 Add One-Digit Numbers
We add numbers from 0 to 9.
Students should recall simple sums quickly.
- Example: 4 + 5 = 9
🎯 Sums Should Be Up to 10
The total (answer) should not be more than 10.
Examples:
- 1 + 4 = 5
- 6 + 3 = 9
- 5 + 5 = 10
👫 Using Counting Strategies
Students can solve using:
👉 Counting on (start with the bigger number)
- Example: 6 + 2 → start with 6, count 2 more: 7, 8
👉 Counting with fingers
👉 Using objects (beads, sticks, blocks)
🧠 Number Bonds to 10 (Very Important!)
These pairs make 10:
- 1 + 9
- 2 + 8
- 3 + 7
- 4 + 6
- 5 + 5
Knowing number bonds helps students add faster.
🎨 Using Pictures & Models
Students may see:
- Dots
- Counters
- Ten-frames
- Number lines
These help them understand addition clearly.
💡 Real-Life Examples
- 4 bananas + 3 bananas = 7 bananas
- 2 pencils + 5 pencils = 7 pencils
🏁 Practice Helps Speed!
- Repeat small addition facts to build fluency and confidence.
Learn with an example
Add:

Count the first group of aliens. The first group has 2 aliens.
Count the second group of aliens. The second group has 0 aliens.
To find the sum of 2 and 0, count all the aliens together, like this:

There are 2 aliens, so 2 + 0 = 2.
Add:

Count the first group of robots. The first group has 7 robots.
Count the second group of robots. The second group has 2 robots.
To find the sum of 7 and 2, count all the robots together, like this:

There are 9 robots, so 7 + 2 = 9.
