Addition with pictures – sums to 20
key notes :
π Addition Means Putting Things Together
When we add, we join groups of objects.
Example: ππ + πππ = 5 apples.
π Use Pictures to Count Easily
Pictures help you see the numbers.
π Count each group one by one.
Example: πΆπΆ + πΆπΆπΆ = 5 dogs.
π Count All the Objects
After finding the number in each group, count everything together.
Example:
π§π§ (2 cupcakes) + π§π§π§π§ (4 cupcakes)
Total = 2 + 4 = 6 π§
π Use Skip Counting to Add Faster
If one group has many objects, start with that number and count on.
Example:
βοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ (5) + βοΈβοΈ (2)
Start at 5 β 6, 7 β 7 stars β¨
π Sums Will Be Up to 20 Only
Make sure your total does not go above 20.
Example:
π»π»π»π» (4) + π»π»π»π»π»π» (6)
= 10 bears π»β¨ (still less than 20)
π Look for Ten Frames (Helpful Tool)
Sometimes pictures are shown in boxes of 10.
π¦π¦π¦π¦π¦π¦π¦π¦π¦π¦ = 10
This helps you add faster.
Example:
π frame + 6 dots = 16
π Use the βCount Onβ Strategy
If you know one number, add the rest by counting on fingers or pictures.
Example:
Start with 8 π§Έ then add 3:
8 β 9 β 10 β 11
Total = 11
π Practice with Real Objects
Use pencils βοΈ, erasers π΅, coins π°, or toys π§Έ to practise addition to 20.
π Check Your Answer
Always count again to make sure the total is correct βοΈπ
π Have Fun While Adding!
Use colourful pictures π¨, stickers π, and emojis π to make learning exciting!
Learn with an example
Add:

Count the first group of fish. The first group has 3 fish.
Count the second group of fish. The second group has 5 fish.
To find the sum of 3 and 5, count all the fish together, like this:

There are 8 fish, so 3 + 5 = 8.
Add:

Count the first group of fish. The first group has 10 fish.
Count the second group of fish. The second group has 2 fish.
To find the sum of 10 and 2, count all the fish together, like this:

here are 12 fish, so 10 + 2 = 12.
Add:

Count the first group of fish. The first group has 8 fish.
Count the second group of fish. The second group has 6 fish.
To find the sum of 8 and 6, count all the fish together, like this:

There are 14 fish, so 8 + 6 = 14.
