Form and use compound words

  • Explain that compound words are made by joining two smaller words to create a new word with a different meaning. For example, “sun” + “flower” = “sunflower.”

  • Show examples of compound words and break them into their individual parts. For instance, “bedroom” (bed + room), “basketball” (basket + ball).

  • Guide students to combine simple words to make new compound words. Use familiar words like “cup” and “cake” to make “cupcake.”

  • Help students understand that the meaning of a compound word is often related to the meanings of the smaller words. For example, a “toothbrush” is used to brush your teeth.

  • Include compound words in reading exercises or stories to help students see how they are used in context.

  • Encourage students to write their own sentences using compound words they have learned.
