What are Synonyms? |
Synonyms are words that have the same or similar meanings. Think of them as word friends! They might not be exactly the same, but they’re close enough to swap places in a sentence.
For example:
- Happy and Glad are synonyms.
- Big and Large are synonyms.
- Fast and Quick are synonyms.
Why are Synonyms Important? |
Using synonyms makes our writing and speaking more interesting! It helps us avoid repeating the same words over and over again. Imagine if you always said “good” – it would get boring! Using synonyms like “great,” “wonderful,” or “fantastic” makes your stories much more fun!
How to Choose the Right Synonym |
- Understand the Word: First, make sure you know what the original word means. If you don’t, ask your teacher or look it up in a dictionary.
- Think of Similar Words: What other words have a meaning close to the original word? Brainstorm a list!
- Test it in a Sentence: Replace the original word with your synonym. Does the sentence still make sense? Does it sound right?
Example:
Original Sentence: The dog is happy.
Synonyms for ‘happy’: glad, joyful, cheerful.
