Sometimes two vowels work together as a vowel digraph. The first vowel in a vowel digraph says its name. It makes a long vowel sound. The second vowel is silent.

The vowel digraph ai makes the long a sound (/ā/).

The vowel digraph ie makes the long i sound (/ī/).
