Each long vowel sound can be spelled a few different ways. So, you have to remember which spelling to use in a long vowel word.

The long a sound (/ā/) is often spelled with aiay or a followed by a consonant and a silent e.

The long e sound (/ē/) is often spelled with ee or ea. It is sometimes spelled with e followed by a consonant and a silent e.

The long i sound (/ī/) is often spelled with ie, y  or i followed by a consonant and a silent e.

The long o sound (/ō/) is often spelled with oa , ow  or o followed by a consonant and a silent e.

The long u sound (/ū/) is often spelled with ue , ew ,  oo or u followed by a consonant and a silent e.
