Order alphabetically based on the first letter

Hi everyone! Today, we’re going to learn how to put words in alphabetical order. This means we’ll put them in order from A to Z, just like the letters in the alphabet.

Why is Alphabetical Order Important?

Putting words in order helps us find them easily! Think about finding a name in a phone book or a word in a dictionary. It’s much easier if everything is in order.

How to Order Words (Easy!)

We only need to look at the first letter of each word! Let’s see some examples:

  1. Look at the first letter of each word.
  2. Think about the alphabet: Which letter comes first?
  3. Put the words in that order!
Example 1:

We have these words:

ball

apple

cat

Which letter comes first in the alphabet? A! So, “apple” comes first.

Then comes B, so “ball” is next.

Finally, C comes last, so “cat” is last.

So, the order is:appleballcat
Example 2:
Let’s try another one:

dog

elephant

fish

Which letter comes first? D! So, “dog” is first.

Next is E, so “elephant” is second.

And F is last, so “fish” comes last.

So, the order is:dogelephantfish
Let’s Practice!

Try putting these words in alphabetical order:

  • sun
  • moon
  • star

What’s the order? (Hint: Think about S, M, and S. Which comes first in the alphabet?)

The answer:

  1. moon
  2. star
  3. sun

Good job, everyone! You’re getting the hang of it! Remember to always look at the first letter and think about the alphabet!
