What is a Dictionary?

A dictionary is like a super helpful book that tells us what words mean! It’s where we go when we’re not sure what a word means or how to spell it. Think of it as a treasure chest full of word secrets!

Finding Words is Easy!

Dictionaries list words in ABC order. That means ‘apple’ comes before ‘banana’, and ‘cat’ comes before ‘dog’.

Imagine the dictionary is like a classroom lineup. Everyone is standing in order from A to Z!

Let’s try to find the word ‘happy’ in a dictionary…

A
B
C
D
E
F
G
H
I
J
We know ‘happy’ starts with the letter ‘H’. So, we open the dictionary to the ‘H’ section. Then, we look for words that start with ‘HA’, then ‘HAP’, and so on, until we find ‘happy’!

It’s like following a map to find a hidden treasure. Each letter guides us closer to the word!
