Is the sentence a statement, question, command or exclamation?

  • A statement tells something.
  • It ends with a period (.)
  • Example: “The cat is sleeping.”

  • A question asks something.
  • It ends with a question mark (?)
  • Example: “What time is it?”

  • A command tells someone to do something.
  • It usually ends with a period (.) but can also end with an exclamation mark (!) if it’s a strong command.
  • Example: “Please close the door.” or “Stop that!”

  • An exclamation expresses strong feelings or emotions.
  • It ends with an exclamation mark (!)
  • Example: “Wow, that’s amazing!”

  • Look at the punctuation at the end of the sentence.
  • Determine the purpose of the sentence:
    • Inform or tell something (Statement)
    • Ask a question (Question)
    • Give an order or request (Command)
    • Show emotion or excitement (Exclamation)
