Is it a complete sentence or a fragment?
key notes :
Understanding a Complete Sentence:
- A complete sentence expresses a full idea.
- It has a subject (who or what the sentence is about) and a predicate (what the subject is doing).
- It usually begins with a capital letter and ends with a period (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!).
Identifying a Fragment:
- A fragment is an incomplete sentence.
- It might be missing a subject or predicate, or it may not express a full idea.
- Fragments often feel like they leave you waiting for more information.
Examples:
- Complete Sentence: “The dog barked loudly.”
- Subject: The dog
- Predicate: barked loudly
- Fragment: “Barked loudly.”
- Missing the subject (who barked?)
Common Signs of Fragments:
- No Subject: “Ran to the store.”
- Who ran to the store?
- No Predicate: “The cat in the hat.”
- What is the cat in the hat doing?
