Is it a complete sentence or a fragment?

  • A complete sentence expresses a full idea.
  • It has a subject (who or what the sentence is about) and a predicate (what the subject is doing).
  • It usually begins with a capital letter and ends with a period (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!).

  • A fragment is an incomplete sentence.
  • It might be missing a subject or predicate, or it may not express a full idea.
  • Fragments often feel like they leave you waiting for more information.

  • Complete Sentence: “The dog barked loudly.”
    • Subject: The dog
    • Predicate: barked loudly
  • Fragment: “Barked loudly.”
    • Missing the subject (who barked?)

  • No Subject: “Ran to the store.”
    • Who ran to the store?
  • No Predicate: “The cat in the hat.”
    • What is the cat in the hat doing?
