Use singular and plural nouns

  • Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or animals. For example: cat, school, apple.

  • Singular nouns refer to one person, place, thing, or animal.
  • Examples:
    • One cat
    • One book
    • One teacher

  • Plural nouns refer to more than one person, place, thing, or animal.
  • Most plural nouns are formed by adding -s to the end of the singular noun.
  • Examples:
    • Cats (more than one cat)
    • Books (more than one book)
    • Teachers (more than one teacher)

  • Nouns ending in -s, -x, -z, -ch, or -sh: Add -es to make them plural.
    • Examples:
      • Bus → Buses
      • Box → Boxes
      • Watch → Watches
  • Nouns ending in a consonant + y: Change the -y to -ies to make them plural.
    • Examples:
      • Candy → Candies
      • Puppy → Puppies
  • Irregular plural nouns do not follow these rules and must be memorized.
    • Examples:
      • Mouse → Mice
      • Tooth → Teeth
