  • The past tense tells us about actions that already happened.
  • Example:
    • πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ I play β†’ Yesterday, I played ⚽.
    • 🍎 I eat β†’ Yesterday, I ate 🍌. (Note: β€œate” is irregular, we’ll focus on regular verbs here.)

  • Most verbs form the past tense by adding -ed.

    • πŸ–οΈ work β†’ worked
    • 🎨 paint β†’ painted

    • play β†’ played ⚽
  • If verb ends with e, just add -d:
    • bake β†’ baked πŸͺ

  • If verb ends with a consonant + y, change y β†’ i + ed:
    • cry β†’ cried 😒
    • try β†’ tried πŸ‹οΈ
  • For short vowel + consonant, double the last letter + ed:
    • hop β†’ hopped 🐸
    • plan β†’ planned πŸ“…
