Form and use the regular past tense

  • Regular past tense verbs tell about actions that already happened.
  • Most regular verbs add “-ed” to the base form.
  • Example:
    • Play ➔ Played
    • Jump ➔ Jumped

  • Add “-ed” to most verbs.
  • Example:
    • Walk ➔ Walked
    • Paint ➔ Painted
  • If a verb ends in “e”, just add “-d”.
  • Example:
    • Dance ➔ Danced
    • Love ➔ Loved
  • If a verb ends in a consonant + “y”, change “y” to “i” and add “-ed”.
  • Example:
    • Cry ➔ Cried
    • Carry ➔ Carried

Write these sentences in the past tense:

  1. I (play) with my toy. ➔ I played with my toy.
  2. She (help) her mom. ➔ She helped her mom.
  3. We (jump) in the park. ➔ We jumped in the park.

Write three sentences using the past tense of the verbs:

  • Read the short passage below and underline all the past tense verbs:
    • “Yesterday, I walked to the park. I played with my friends. We talked and laughed.”

  • Use a dictionary or ask an adult to check your sentences. Make sure the verbs are in the past tense.

  • Draw a picture of something you did yesterday.
  • Write 2-3 sentences about it using past tense verbs.
  • Example: “Yesterday, I painted a picture. I used many colors. I felt happy.”

  • Fill in the blanks with the past tense of the verbs in brackets:
