Form and use the irregular past tense: set 1

  • Irregular past tense verbs are verbs that do not follow the regular rule of adding “-ed” to form the past tense.
  • Each irregular verb has its own unique past tense form that must be memorized.

  • gowent
  • comecame
  • seesaw
  • eatate
  • runran
  • givegave

  • “I went to the park yesterday.”
  • “She came to my house last night.”
  • “They saw a movie on Sunday.”
  • “He ate his lunch quickly.”
  • “The dog ran across the yard.”
  • “Mom gave me a present.”

  • Irregular verbs can change in different ways:
    • Some verbs change completely (e.g., go ➔ went).
    • Some verbs change only the vowel (e.g., run ➔ ran).
    • Some verbs stay the same in the present and past tense (e.g., cut ➔ cut, which is not part of this set but good to know).

  • Irregular past tense verbs are used to talk about actions that happened in the past.
  • Unlike regular verbs, they do not use “-ed” endings.
