Identify articles

  • Articles are words that help define a noun as specific or nonspecific.
  • There are two main articles: “a” and “an.”

  • Definite Article: “the”
    • Refers to a specific noun.
    • Example: “the dog” (a specific dog).
  • Indefinite Articles: “a” and “an”
    • Refers to any one of a group.
    • “a”: Used before words starting with a consonant sound.
    • Example: “a book,” “a car.”
    • “an”: Used before words starting with a vowel sound.
    • Example: “an apple,” “an egg.”

  • Look for the words “a,” “an,” and “the” in a sentence.
  • Determine if the noun is specific or nonspecific:
    • “the” is used when talking about something specific.
    • “a” and “an” are used for general items.

  • “I saw a bird.” (indefinite article)
  • “She gave me an orange.” (indefinite article)
  • “The cat is sleeping.” (definite article)

  • Identify the articles in these sentences:
    • “The sun is shining.”
    • “I want an ice cream.”
    • “She has a puppy.”
