What is Subtraction?
- Subtraction means taking away some objects from a group.

Subtraction Symbol
- The symbol for subtraction is “−”.
- Example: 5 − 3 = 2
Subtraction Terms
Minuend: The number you start with.
Subtrahend: The number you take away.
Difference: The answer you get after subtracting.
Example: 7 − 4 = 3
- Minuend = 7
- Subtrahend = 4
- Difference = 3
Subtraction Facts (up to 10)
Know your number pairs that make 10:
- 10 − 1 = 9
- 10 − 2 = 8
- 10 − 3 = 7
- …
- 10 − 9 = 1
Counting Back Method
- Start from the minuend and count back the subtrahend.
- Example: 6 − 2 → start at 6, count back 2 → 5, 4 → answer = 4
Using Objects
- Use fingers, beads, or toys to help subtract.
- Example: You have 5 candies 🍬🍬🍬🍬🍬 and eat 2 🍬🍬 → left = 3 🍬
Zero in Subtraction
- Any number minus 0 is the number itself.
- Example: 7 − 0 = 7
