What is Subtraction?
- Subtraction means taking away or finding how many are left.
- Example:
5 - 2 = 3✅
(Take 2 away from 5, 3 are left)
Using Fingers ✋
- Count objects on your fingers and take away the number to find the answer.
- Example: Show 7 fingers → take away 4 → 3 fingers left.
Using Number Line ➖
- Draw a line of numbers from 0 to 10.
- Start at the bigger number → move backward by the smaller number.
- Example:
8 - 3→ start at 8, move 3 steps back → land on 5.
Using Counters or Objects 🟢🔵
- Use small objects like buttons or stones.
- Count total → remove some → count what is left.
Subtraction as “Finding the Difference” ⚖️
- Example: “I have 9 apples, my friend has 6 apples. How many more do I have?”
- 9 − 6 = 3
Subtraction with Pictures 🖼️
- Draw pictures of objects and cross out the number taken away.
- Count the remaining objects for the answer.
Using Addition to Check ✔️
- You can check subtraction using addition:
- Example:
7 − 4 = 3 - Check:
3 + 4 = 7✅
- Example:
Quick Facts: Subtracting 0 and the Number Itself
- Any number minus 0 = same number
- Any number minus itself = 0
- Examples:
6 - 0 = 6,7 - 7 = 0
