An addition sentence shows how two numbers are added together.
It has three parts:

  • Addend + Addend = Sum
    Example: 7 + 5 = 12 ➡️ The answer (12) is the sum.

🔢 Use of the Addition Sign (+)

  • The plus sign (+) means add.
  • The equal sign (=) means the total is.
    Example: 14 + 3 = 17 😊

📊 Add Up to Two-Digit Numbers

  • One-digit + one-digit
  • One-digit + two-digit
  • Two-digit + two-digit
    Example: 23 + 12 = 35 🎉

🎈 Add Tens and Ones

Break the numbers into tens and ones:

  • 27 = 2️⃣ tens + 7️⃣ ones
  • Add the tens and ones separately.
    Example:
    27 + 12 = (20 + 10) + (7 + 2) = 39 ✔️

🔁 Order Doesn’t Change the Sum

Switching the numbers does not change the answer.
Example:
16 + 4 = 4 + 16 = 20 🔄

Students can add using:

Then write the addition sentence.
Example: 5 apples + 3 apples = 5 + 3 = 8
