- Regrouping means carrying a number to the next place value.
- When the ones add up to 10 or more, we regroup! ๐โจ
๐ข Place Value Reminder
- Tens (T) โ groups of 10
- Ones (O) โ single units
- Example: 27 = 2 tens and 7 ones ๐๐
๐ Steps to Add With Regrouping
1๏ธโฃ Step 1: Add the Ones
- Add the digits in the ones place first.
- If the sum is 10 or more, regroup!
- Example: 7 + 5 = 12 โ write 2 in ones, carry 1 to tens ๐ฅ
2๏ธโฃ Step 2: Regroup
- Carry the extra ten to the tens place.
- โ๏ธ Write it above the tens column.
3๏ธโฃ Step 3: Add the Tens
Add the tens digits plus the carried number.
Example:
- Tens: 2 + 1 (carried) = 3
- So, 27 + 5 = 32 โ๏ธ

27 + 8
- Ones: 7 + 8 = 15 โ write 5, carry 1
- Tens: 2 + 1 = 3

When the ones place total is 10 or more.
