Add two two-digit numbers – without regrouping
key notes :
2-Digit Addition without Regrouping
2-digit addition without regrouping is the simplest form of addition. This method is used in daily life while shopping or doing any financial transaction. Here, when the sum is less than or equal to 9, we write the number under the respective place value column and do not carry forward any number to the next column. Let us understand this with an example using the following steps.
Example: Add 45 and 31.
Solution:

- Step 1: Arrange the addends according to their place value, i.e., ones and tens. So, 5 and 1 will be under the ones column and 4 and 3 will be placed under the tens column.
- Step 2: Start adding the numbers from right to left, i.e., from ones to tens. This means 5 + 1 = 6. Move on to the tens column, 4 + 3 = 7.
- Step 3: After adding both the columns we get, 45 + 31 = 76. Therefore, the sum is 76.
Learn with an example
Add. 19 + 80 =
Add the ones. Add 9 + 0.
19 + 80 = 9
Add the tens. Add 1 + 8.
19 + 89 = 99
The sum is 99.
Add. 35 + 33 =
Add the ones. Add 5 + 3.
35 + 33 = 8
Add the tens. Add 3 + 3.
35 + 33 = 68
The sum is 68.
Add. 13 + 46 =
Add the ones. Add 3 + 6.
13 + 46 = 9
Add the tens. Add 1 + 4.
13 + 46 = 59
