Add two two-digit numbers – with regrouping
key notes :
๐ข What is regrouping?
- Regrouping means carrying a number to the next place value.
- When the ones total is 10 or more, we regroup.
๐ Example: 8 + 7 = 15 โ write 5 in ones, carry 1 to tens.
๐งฎ Steps to Add Two Two-Digit Numbers With Regrouping ๐ก
โ๏ธ Step 1: Line up the numbers
- Write the numbers one under the other.
- Make sure tens under tens, ones under ones.
๐ Step 2: Add the ones
Add the ones digits first.
If the sum is 10 or more, regroup by:
- Writing the ones digit
- Carrying the tens digit to the tens place.
๐ Step 3: Add the tens
- Add the tens digits.
- Donโt forget to add the regrouped (carried) number!
๐ Step 4: Write the final answer
๐ Example
27
+ 48
------
1๏ธโฃ Add ones โ 7 + 8 = 15 โ write 5, carry 1
2๏ธโฃ Add tens โ 2 + 4 + 1 (carried) = 7
โ
Answer = 75
๐ก Important Tips
- Always start adding from the ones place ๐ 1๏ธโฃ
- Double-check your carried number โ๏ธ
- Regroup ONLY when the ones are 10 or more ๐โก๏ธ
- Write numbers neatly to avoid mistakes โ๏ธ๐
๐ Why regrouping is needed?
- Numbers in the ones place cannot be more than 9.
- So extra value moves to the tens place.
๐ This keeps our place value system correct! ๐ฏ
๐ง Real-life example
๐ You have 28 candies.
Your friend gives you 35 more.
You add 8 + 5 = 13 โ regroup โ carry 1
Then add tens โ 2 + 3 + 1 = 6
๐ฌ Total candies = 63
