Ways to make a number using addition

๐Ÿ”ข A Number Can Be Made in Many Ways

  • We can add different pairs of numbers to make the same total.
  • Example: 5 = 2 + 3 = 4 + 1 = 0 + 5 โœจ

โž• Order Doesnโ€™t Change the Sum

Changing the order of numbers does not change the answer.

Example:

  • 3 + 4 = 7
  • 4 + 3 = 7

This is called the Commutative Property ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿงฎ Use Number Partners (Number Bonds)

Number bonds help us see two parts that make a whole.

Example for 8:

  • 8 = 5 + 3
  • 8 = 6 + 2
  • 8 = 7 + 1
  • 8 = 4 + 4

These are called โ€œpartners of 8โ€ ๐Ÿงฉ

๐ŸŽจ Use Objects, Pictures, or Fingers

Students can find different ways using:
๐ŸŸข Counters
๐Ÿ”ต Beads
๐Ÿ”ด Buttons
๐ŸŸก Drawings
๐Ÿ–๏ธ Fingers

Helps them see the parts clearly!

๐ŸŒˆ Zero Doesnโ€™t Change the Number

  • Adding 0 keeps the number the same.
  • Example: 9 = 9 + 0 ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿง  Try All Possible Combinations

To fully understand a number, try making it in as many ways as possible.

Example for 10:

  • 10 = 1 + 9
  • 10 = 2 + 8
  • 10 = 3 + 7
  • 10 = 4 + 6
  • 10 = 5 + 5 ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿ“ Addition Sentences Help Us Show Our Thinking

Example:

  • โ€œI used 4 red balls and 3 blue balls.
    So, 4 + 3 = 7.โ€ ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ”ต

๐ŸŒŸ Addition Makes Numbers Bigger

  • Adding means we are joining two groups.
  • The total will be equal to or greater than the biggest part.
  • Example: 6 + 2 = 8 ๐Ÿ“ˆ
