Regroup tens and ones – ways to make a number

  • Tens and ones are the basic building blocks of numbers. The tens place shows how many groups of 10 are in a number, and the ones place shows how many single units (1s) are in a number.
  • When you have more than 9 ones in a number, you can “regroup” the ones into a group of 10 and move them to the tens place. This helps you express the number in a more manageable way.
  • For example, 14 can be written as 1 ten and 4 ones.
  • 23 can be written as 2 tens and 3 ones.
  • If you have 18, you can regroup 8 ones as 1 ten and 8 ones, making it 2 tens and 8 ones.

Numbers can be written in different ways using tens and ones. For example, 34 can be written as:

  • 3 tens and 4 ones
  • Or as 1 ten and 14 ones (after regrouping the ones)

Learn with an example

✈️ 32 is 3 tens plus 2 ones.

  • 2 tens plus 13 ones
  • 2 tens plus 12 ones
  • 1 ten plus 2 ones
  • 1 ten plus 12 ones

You can check that another way to make 32 is 2 tens plus 12 ones.

Carry over the ones:

  • 2 tens + 12 ones = 2 tens + 1 ten + 2 ones

Count all the tens together:

  • 2 tens + 1 ten + 2 ones = 3 tens + 2 ones

Write the number:

  • 3 tens + 2 ones = 32

So, 2 tens plus 12 ones make 32.

The other answer choices do not make 32:

2 tens plus 13 ones make 33
1 ten plus 2 ones make 12
1 ten plus 12 ones make 22

✈️ 86 is 8 tens plus 6 ones.

  • 7 tens plus 16 ones
  • 6 tens plus 8 ones
  • 6 tens plus 18 ones
  • 7 tens plus 18 ones

You can check that another way to make 86 is 7 tens plus 16 ones.

Carry over the ones:

  • 7 tens + 16 ones = 7 tens + 1 ten + 6 ones

Count all the tens together:

  • 7 tens + 1 ten + 6 ones = 8 tens + 6 ones

Write the number:

8 tens + 6 ones = 86

So, 7 tens plus 16 ones make 86.

The other answer choices do not make 86:

6 tens plus 8 ones make 68
6 tens plus 18 ones make 78
7 tens plus 18 ones make 88

✈️ 97 is 9 tens plus 7 ones.

  • 7 tens plus 19 ones
  • 7 tens plus 9 ones
  • 8 tens plus 17 ones
  • 7 tens plus 7 ones

You can check that another way to make 97 is 8 tens plus 17 ones.

Carry over the ones:

  • 8 tens + 17 ones = 8 tens + 1 ten + 7 ones

Count all the tens together:

  • 8 tens + 1 ten + 7 ones = 9 tens + 7 ones

Write the number:

  • 9 tens + 7 ones = 97

So, 8 tens plus 17 ones make 97.

The other answer choices do not make 97:

7 tens plus 19 ones make 89
7 tens plus 9 ones make 79
7 tens plus 7 ones make 77
