What Are Muscles?

  • Muscles are soft tissues in our body that help us move.
  • They are like stretchy rubber bands that can tighten and relax.

Skeletal Muscles

  • These muscles are attached to bones.
  • They help us move our arms, legs, and other body parts.
  • We can control these muscles by thinking about moving.

Smooth Muscles

  • These muscles are found in our stomach, intestines, and other organs.
  • They work automatically without us thinking about it.

Cardiac Muscle

  • This muscle is found only in the heart.
  • It works non-stop to pump blood throughout our body.

Muscle Pairs

  • Muscles usually work in pairs. When one muscle tightens, the other relaxes.
  • For example, to bend our elbow, the muscle on the front of our arm tightens while the one on the back relaxes.

Movement

  • Muscles pull on bones to make them move.
  • Different muscles work together to help us do activities like running, jumping, and playing.

Exercise

  • Moving our bodies helps muscles stay strong.
  • Activities like running, playing, and even walking help keep muscles healthy.

Healthy Eating

  • Eating foods like fruits, vegetables, and proteins helps muscles grow and stay strong.
  • Drinking water is also important for muscle health.

Number of Muscles

  • Our body has more than 600 muscles.
  • The smallest muscle is in the ear, and the biggest is in the buttocks (gluteus maximus).

Involuntary Muscles

  • Some muscles work without us thinking, like our heart muscle.

Feel Your Muscles

  • Try tightening your arm muscle (biceps) and feel it with your other hand.
  • Notice how it becomes firm when you bend your elbow.

Muscle Stretch

  • Stretch your arms and legs to feel how your muscles can stretch and relax.
