🌟 What does “make a number” mean?

• Making a number means showing different ways to get the same number.
• We can use addition ( + ) and subtraction ( − ).

➕ Making numbers using addition

Add two or more numbers to get a total.

Example:

• 30 + 20 = 50
• 40 + 10 = 50
• 25 + 25 = 50
  👉 All these are different ways to make 50.

➖ Making numbers using subtraction

Subtract one number from another.

Example:

• 70 − 20 = 50
• 90 − 40 = 50
  👉 These also make 50.

🔄 Fact families (number bonds)

Numbers are connected in a group.

Example:

• 20 + 30 = 50
• 30 + 20 = 50
• 50 − 20 = 30
• 50 − 30 = 20

👉 These are called a fact family.

🔢 Use tens and ones

Break numbers into tens and ones.

Example:

• 50 = 5 tens
• 34 = 30 + 4

👉 Helps to add and subtract easily.

🧩 Making numbers in different ways

A number can be made in many ways.

Example for 60:

• 50 + 10
• 40 + 20
• 70 − 10
• 80 − 20

Use the opposite operation:

• If 30 + 20 = 50
