🔢 Understanding Word Problems

  • Word problems are math stories using numbers.
  • Read the problem carefully at least two times.
  • Find out what is given and what is asked.

➕ When to Use Addition

Use addition when we:

  • Put together
  • Add more
  • Find total

Look for clue words:

  • altogether, in all, total, sum, together

👉 Example:
Ravi has 25 apples. He buys 30 more. How many apples now?
➡️ 25 + 30 = 55


➖ When to Use Subtraction

Use subtraction when we:

  • Take away
  • Find how many left
  • Compare

Look for clue words:

  • left, fewer, take away, minus, difference

👉 Example:
There are 80 candies. 35 are eaten. How many are left?
➡️ 80 − 35 = 45

  • Add the numbers of letters.
  • Add: 44 + 2=
  • You can count up to add. Start from 44 and count up 2:
  • 44, 45, 46
  • 44 + 2=46
  • The sum is 46. Ted now has 46 letters.

💡 Susan is building a cabinet. She needs 33 one-inch bolts and 12 one-and-a-half-inch bolts.

💡 A car dealer has a total of 97 cars. He has 56 new cars.

  • Subtract the tens.
