Hi everyone! Today, we’re going to learn about guide words<\/strong>. They’re like little helpers in the dictionary that show you which words are on that page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are Guide Words?<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Guide words are at the top<\/strong> of each page in the dictionary. There are two<\/strong> of them, one on the left<\/strong> and one on the right<\/strong>. They tell you the first<\/strong> and last<\/strong> word on that page, alphabetically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Guide Word:<\/strong>

The word that comes first on the page (alphabetically).

Everything on that page starts with this word… or comes after<\/em> it in the alphabet!

Example:<\/strong> If the first guide word is apple<\/strong>, all the words on that page will be apple<\/em>, apricot, astronaut, etc.<\/td>		Second Guide Word:<\/strong>

The word that comes last on the page (alphabetically).

Everything on that page comes before this word in the alphabet!

Example:<\/strong> If the second guide word is balloon<\/strong>, all the words on that page will be baby, bake, ball, balloon.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
How to Use Guide Words<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Let’s say you want to find the word ‘cat<\/strong>‘ in the dictionary. Here’s how guide words can help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Open the dictionary to a random page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Look at the guide words at the top of the page. Let’s pretend they are ‘bug<\/strong>‘ and ‘dog<\/strong>‘.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Ask yourself: Does ‘cat<\/strong>‘ come between ‘bug<\/strong>‘ and ‘dog<\/strong>‘ in the alphabet?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Yes! Bug<\/em>, Cat<\/em>, Dog<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. If not, turn the page until you find guide words that ‘cat<\/strong>‘ comes between.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Let’s try another one. You want to find the word ‘zebra<\/strong>‘. You see the guide words ‘water<\/strong>‘ and ‘xylophone<\/strong>‘.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Does ‘zebra<\/strong>‘ come between ‘water<\/strong>‘ and ‘xylophone<\/strong>‘?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    No! Water, Xylophone, Zebra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You need to turn further into the dictionary until you find guide words that include Z.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
